A Different Kind of Strength
"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power." - Ephesians 6:10
My husband and I watch America's Funniest Home Videos off and on. I noticed the other day how many videos are submitted from people taping themselves working out - lifting really heavy weights, in particular. That's one kind of strength to be proud of, but in Paul's verse above, I think he's talking about a different kind of strength.
Paul calls us to be strong in the Lord, relying on the strength of God's power to make us strong. I think about the kid who has to deal with bullies at school and the strength it takes to not only show up for school, but to keep a gentle and loving heart while others are being cruel. I think about the hospice nurse who accompanies people as they die with respect and comfort and I wonder what kind of strength it must take to be able to do that job day in and day out. I think about the college student who knows in her heart what she wants to do as a career, but it's not "good enough" for her family, and yet she finds the strength to push on. In all sorts of everyday kinds of ways, we call on the strength of the Lord to be our strength. And we get through. And we learn. And we grow.
Lord, I feel overwhelmed and afraid. I need the power of your strength in my life. I don't want to be powerful and ruthless. I want to be able to show up to life honestly and be able to handle it. Help me to be strong. Amen.
Faithful travels everyone,
