God's Word Like Water to Thirsty World

(The LORD said) "For as the rain and snow come down from heaven and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose and succeed in the thing for which I sent it." - Isaiah 55:10-11

Have you ever had a teacher or a special mentor in your life tell you you did something well? I once had a teacher in 5th grade who told me that I was a good writer and should keep it up. (As I look back on the jumble I wrote in 5th grade, I wonder how she got that impression!). But, that encouragement has stuck with me all these year. Funny, how words can do that.

In the passage above, the LORD is speaking to the Israelite exiles in Babylon. The LORD says that his word has a purpose and will succeed in that purpose, bringing nourishment of faith to the people, just like bread nourishes hunger and water nourishes thirst. God's word nourishes a deep pit of need in us. God's word comes to us in many ways - through Scripture, through Christ the Word and through general inspiration. God can and will reach us as God desires. Much like you can't stop or control a stream running down a mountain, God's word will go and accomplish the thing for which God sent it!

Dear God, help me to trust that you have something to say to me. Help me to know that you have a purpose for me. Bless me with the patience and an open heart to listen. Amen.

Faithful travels everyone,
