"For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith." Romans 1:16

Looking at a superhero database, I see 420 superheroes, from A-bomb to Zatanna. You would recognize some, but many names may be unfamiliar. Each superhero has some special power or ability that they use in their mission. Each one has a mission to do good in our world.

In a similar way, each one of us has different gifts and abilities. Each one of us is called by God to do good in our world. We may not be "superheroes," but each of us has been given power by the Holy Spirit and a mission to accomplish in our world.

When I was a kid, I was shy- painfully shy. Sometimes I found it hard to talk even with relatives. And now, decades later, sometimes I speak to hundreds of people- friends and strangers. I have my own superhero to thank for that change- the Spirit of God. My life has been transformed by God's grace.

My home congregation nurtured my faith in so many ways. Camp provided a special spark that helped me grow in new ways. Both were safe environments where I was encouraged and challenged to become a disciple of Jesus. Then the Spirit called me out and empowered me to serve God in other places.

No matter where I have been, where I served God, I've found two things: There are many ways to continue growing in faith- churches, retreats, service projects, pilgrimages. And there are people out there (beyond our churches and camps) who haven't yet heard the good news of our God who is loving, merciful, forgiving, empowering, full of grace and truth. Just as I thank God for those who helped me grow in faith, I treasure memories of times when God gave me opportunities and courage to speak from my heart about our faith in God.

The Spirit can empower great things in your life, too! God has given you unique gifts through which you can bless others. May God give you opportunities to share your faith, and courage to share God's good news through your words and service.
