Posé

Posé: A pause or rest stop along the Voyageurs' portage trail. Usually about ½ mile apart. We invite you to take a pause in your day to reflect and pray with us.

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." -Acts 1:8

So to begin, disclaimer: I am a huge superhero nerd, and I have been one my whole life. Comic books, cartoons, movies, I love it all. So when I was asked to write a Posé, and that the theme for this summer was Superheroes, I got way too excited. My mind started buzzing trying to think of all the possible superhero/devotional topic combinations I could think of. Finally, I settled on Spider-Man. Now Spider-Man isn't one of my favorite superheroes, I still like him though, but one thing he really has going for him, other than the spider powers, is his legendary motto: "With great power comes great responsibility."

Spider-Man's uncle, and father figure, Ben said this to him in their last conversation before Ben was killed. This phrase went on to greatly define Spider-Man, why he became a superhero, and why he uses the powers he has been given for the betterment of others. I believe Acts 1:8 to be very similar to Uncle Ben's last words of guidance. Jesus is telling his disciples that they will receive power through the Holy Spirit. And with that power, they have a great responsibility to be witnesses to the gospel, conduits of God's love, and extensions of the Body of Christ. And after Jesus says this, he ascends into Heaven and physically leaves this world of ours.

This is a message for you and me as well. We have, are, and will be given power through the Holy Spirit, and that power was not given to us to hoard, keep locked up, or not use, but it was given so that we might recognize that we have a responsibility to continue the ministry of Jesus and be Christ in this world by loving, serving, and empowering others as we have first been loved, served, and empowered. How have you been empowered by the Holy Spirit? What would the world look like if more people lived more intentionally by Spider-Man's motto: "With great power comes great responsibility?" How can you be a witness to the love of God through the power you've been given?
