This week we celebrate the life and mourn the loss of a dear camp family member. Jack Soltis, husband of Jan, the Hospitality Coordinator at Camp Hiawatha, passed away Wednesday, March 4 surrounded by family after a brief but courageous battle with brain cancer. His time between diagnosis and eternal life was far too short, but he made the most of each day, spending time with those he loved and doing the things he enjoyed doing - fishing, laughing, playing with the grandkids, being with family.
If you knew Jack at all, however, you also know that he got the most out of every single day. He was not one to sit around and wait for things to happen - Jack went out and found work, fun, or a good laugh. Whether he was trying new things with his brothers as a youth (oh the stories he would tell!), plowing roads for the county, dancing at the Bluegrass Festival, or jumping in on a game or campfire at camp, Jack never let a day be dull. And if you made him duff in a canoe with the food pack, you wouldn't be surprised if your trail mix disappeared!
If Jan Soltis has been the face of Camp Hiawatha for the past 15 years, Jack was the laugh. Together they worked hard to make camp a warm and welcoming place. Camp will not be the same without him and he will be missed.
Funeral services for Jack will be Wednesday, March 11 at 11:00am at Zion Lutheran in Grand Rapids. Visitation prior to the service beginning at 10. Click here to read Jack's Obituary.
