 Seeking God in the Silence

"The Lord said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper." 1 Kings 19:11-12

Often when we do camping ministry we use strong illustrations to water; I love that! To be reminded that we are washed in the promises of our baptism and be held in the God's hand so closely - it's beautiful.  One way I was reminded of God's presence all the more was this past summer while on the trail in the BWCA with my youth from church in moments of silence.  "Kids these days" are over stimulated and busier than ever. Camp helps our young people find value in all sorts of other authentic things, and one of those is seeing God in the silence.  Our guide and my dear friend Megan Moroff challenged our group to do a silent paddle and attempt to notice things that they otherwise wouldn't. This endeavor lasted nearly 2 hours, 3 lakes, and 2 decent portages! The kids from our group were truly astonished at what they could accomplish without all the noise and, even more, just how much they noticed God in the beauty of creation when they decided to look. May we find small moments to see God today, not in our busyness or in our tweets but in the simplest of things - in the silence.
