As 2014 comes to a close we look with great excitement towards the coming year, especially the groundbreaking for the new dining hall and retreat facility at Camp Vermilion. The project will mark the completion of the Tend and Nourish campaign and launch the VLM Facility Fund to support long term maintenance at both Camp Hiawatha and Camp Vermilion. Since the 2013 Annual Meeting, where delegates voted to break ground on the Camp Vermilion Dining Hall "no later than July of 2015", a timeline has been laid out and fundraising and design have been a priority. Rejoice with us at how much has been accomplished so far! Thank you for your generosity, and please mark your calendars: Ground breaking for Camp Vermilion Dining Hall building, May 16th, 2015 during Work Day. More details to come.
"Watch Them Flourish"
VLM receives $150,000 leadership gift for "Watch Them Flourish" appeal!
"Watch Them Flourish" is an appeal to complete the Tend and Nourish capital campaign. The appeal seeks to raise $1.7 million which will build a much needed year round dining and retreat facility at Camp Vermilion in Cook, MN. The facility will serve as a dining hall for 160 summer campers and a center for year round retreats.
VLM recently received an anonymous gift of $150,000 for the "Watch Them Flourish" appeal. "With this gift, we hope to encourage others to be part of this project at Camp Vermilion." VLM is blessed by the generosity and leadership from families and organizations that do so much for camp.
We are truly thankful for this gift and look forward to watching our campers flourish at both Camp Vermilion and Camp Hiawatha.
Building Site Preparation
The site is being prepped for excavation and septic design. The Canteen/Health Center is being cleaned out and special items are being removed. The building will be deconstructed in January. If you are interested in coming to say goodbye to the old building and see how the progress is moving along, please give us a call at 218.666.5465.
Volunteer Crews Needed
Many people have started asking "How can I help build the dining hall?" We are glad you asked! Gregg Velander, the Dining Hall Project Manager for VLM is putting together the timeline and list of volunteer projects. There are some needs for tree cutting and fencing as we prepare for construction. Most of the volunteer projects will be scheduled for Fall 2015 - Winter 2016 after the foundation, walls, and roof are up. These will include painting, decking, furniture building, tiling, and many other skilled projects. There will also be a lot of additional work as the site landscaped and the project finishes in the Spring of 2016. As the schedule settles, we will be sharing the list. If you have a crew that would like to be involved, please contact Gregg at 218-391-3690.
