 Choosing Quality Time

But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary.  Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her." -Luke 10:41-42

Get birthday present for Joe.  Check.  Donate money to the church.  Check.  Help neighbor rake her yard.  Check.  I am on a roll.  My to-do list is getting crossed off at a record speed.  As a task oriented person, I love my to-do list.  I feel like I am doing good things and can prove it - here's the list!  But my list is also exhausting.  It always asks something of me and never gives me anything in return.  It can leave me feeling quite inept sometimes when I have no energy left to meet the demands I've created for myself.

The story of Mary and Martha above is classic.  Martha is scratching off her to-do list in order to prepare for and please Jesus, while Mary sits by him and spends quality time.  Jesus says that Mary has chosen the better way.  These words are a constant reminder to me that we can hustle and bustle around, but it can leave us feeling empty.   More leaves are going to fall and I will have to rake again.  These things are necessary and good to do of course, but they do not provide the ultimate meaning in our life.  Time with God touches that timeless part of us.  As we delight in the mystery of God, that delight can never be taken away.  We experience the ultimate and such an experience puts everything else in life into perspective.

How do you spend quality time with God?  Some people have a morning ritual to "commune" or spend time with God through scripture reading, meditation, prayer, journaling, or considering the upcoming day in silence...with a cup of coffee...and a doughnut.  The point is - you and God make it your own time, just like you and your friends have favorite times to hang out and favorite things to do.  When do you feel most open to God's presence?  Build on that - possibly because it's how God is calling you into a deeper relationship! - and enjoy the many blessings that God, the Ultimate has to share with you.
